they say to always watch out for the quiet ones, i have found over the course of my artistic career, and to a greater degree over the last several weeks of reviewing these pens that as similar theme of those cheap ones, they might just surprise you.
i know that i've mentioned before that there is a certain prestige in owning expensive and fine quality tools and supplies, it makes sense, if you are able to afford them you must be having some measurable success in some way or another. what is easy to overlook or forget is that art sprang from smearing berries on a wall or using burnt pieces of wood to express some concept/thought/idea back when we were living in caves.
the low tech factor is used to this day, there are purists who make their own charcoal and find their own clay. the point is that, as i have said before, price can equal quality, but effective tools are not always bound by their cost.
this pen, the vontone bottle pen, bought at the dollar tree, will set you back $1 for a pair. they are made of 80% recycled plastic, the are cheap, no frills pens that will probably not withstand the test of time but work wonderfully while they last. the tip is a fine point ballpoint, the ink dries fast, covers pencils, has a good range of value between black and nothing, has a good bite, flow and consistent line, good for precision work, sketches and writing. all around it is a good pen, especially for the cost.
the down sides of this pen is that it feels cheap, but it is cheap so, go figure and sometimes the pen will need to get warmed up by scribbling to get the ink flow going. that's about it.
if you have the chance to get a pair its not much of a risk. i will say that after buying the initial pack of test pens i went back and picked up two more for future use. and although it might not be noticeable in the finished versions of the last two pieces i have made this week,
